“Terrorists” Busted!

There is no way I could let this slide:
That was pretty much the gist over the weekend, as seven men were arrested for an alleged plot to blow up the Sears Tower. This along with the “Weapons of Mass Destruction” that Santorum found last week, and you’d think we’d won the War on Terror. But very quickly it became clear that the group had no organization and posed no real threat, and it was all just a big mix-up. Oops.

Or was it?:

BuzzFlash is not saying that there wasn’t a plot against the Sears Tower, but it was awfully curious timing for a “raid,” wasn’t it? After all, the Dems had just finished making their first somewhat united effort to initiate a troop withdrawal from Iraq (just disagreeing over the timetable — with only a few renegades, like GOP Joe Lieberman). It reminds us of the old days when Tommy Thompson rolled out a color coded terror alert whenever the Bush Administration experienced a dip in the polls…Actually, it’s quite easy to explain. This is Rovian cynicism and mass media manipulation at its essence. Put a false claim out there through any means possible, then quietly debunk the assertion. The false claim gets picked up and conveyed with alarm by the likes of Rush Limbaugh, FOX News and even the rest of the mainstream press. Meanwhile, the disproof of the false assertion gets left behind in the crowd, like a milk carton that is trampled in a feverish rush of people who are running from the boogeyman.

The Poli Sci 101 definition of a terrorist is anyone who stirs up trouble and violence to scare people into supporting policies. Sound familiar?

Don’t be too discouraged though; Poli Sci 101 also teaches us that terrorism never wins in the long term.

America: The Proudest Country in the World

When it comes to national pride, Americans are No. 1, according to a survey of 34 countries’ patriotism…
People rated how proud they were of their countries in 10 areas: political influence, social security, the way their democracy works, economic success, science and technology, sports, arts and literature, military, history, and fair treatment of all groups in society.

Despite everything, we still have it. Nows the time to change directions so we dont lose it.

A Silly Question:

With so many important and pressing issues facing the nation, why is the Senate taking the entier day to debate flag burning? Does anyone really burn flags anyway? Certainly not enough to demand legislation, right?

Bush & Co. condem NY Times

One of, if not the most respected journalistic institutions in the country is under fire again from the Bush administration. Bush is unhappy because, for the second time in months, the Times has exposed his unlawful activity. War was declared last year when the Times published an article about the secret wiretaps on American citizens being carried out without warrants. This time it exposed the illegal monitoring of American’s bank records without warrants. Don’t blame the messenger.

Stick Up For The Little Guy: The American Way

What happened to the American dream?  Making something from nothing, working hard to provide a better life for yourself and your family.  We look at great men of history like John D. Rockefeller, who was brilliant not only for recognizing a demand and creating the supply, but for recognizing that he could never have reached the success he did without people less fortunate than himself.  So he gave charitably, not because he had to, but because he felt it was his duty to help those less fortunate. Just yesterday another, similar act of kindness: Warren Buffett, the second richest man in America, endowed his $30 billion fortune to the Bill and Malinda Gates Foundation.

So why then is the Republican Congress so opposed to helping the working class (many of whom are their constituents and supporters)?  Why have there been over ten congressional pay raises since the last raise for the federal minimum wage?  Why would they fight to relief the tax burden on the children of millionaires who have never worked a single day in their lives.  These are the people who should be giving back.  The most fortunate among us stand on the shoulders of the weaker.  Isn’t it only right that they are forced to give back, if not in the form of donations, in the form of taxes that can go to relive the burden on the poor?  Don’t the men and woman who are not lucky enough to have rich parents deserve a shot at the American dream?

a worker paid $5.15 an hour (the current minimum wage) would earn $10,700 a year, almost $6,000 below the poverty line for a family of three.

Don’t we owe the working class of America, on whom the soul of the country relies, better than an impoverished life?  Do they deserve to get poorer (despite hard work and dedication) as the rich get richer (just for breathing)?

Republicans say that the only people who can’t survive on the minimum wage are part time teenagers and lazy bums.  Talk about out of touch.

Republicans believe the estate tax hurts little family farmers and mom and pop business owners.  But they can’t name a single farm effected by the tax.  Talk about out of touch.
