Lets Make Change.

Have an ‘Invonvenient’ Weekend

I know we usually do a Saturday open thread and then a 'Sunday Morning Talk Shows' thread but I have a busy weekend so I'm combining the two here.  If you have two hours to spare this weekend go see Al Gore's new film 'An Inconvenient Truth'.

I especially encourage those of you who believe the entire thing is a hoax by the left to ruin the economy. The film is very respectful of people who have been tricked into thinking that by the powerful big business. A statistic I never knew:

53% of mainstream articles pose doubt about the validity of Global Warming

0% of pear reviewed Science essays/reports show doubt about it's validity

Please go see it. I know the trailer makes it out to be this blockbuster documentary that plays to your emotions but I assure you the film is almost all raw science. Statistics, studies, photos, reports and graphs. That's it.

Enjoy your weekend.

  1. I especially encourage those of you who believe the entire thing is a hoax by the left to ruin the economy.

People who believe that don’t deserve to see the movie.

I’m no scientist nor any expert on the subject but here is how I see global warming:

Scientists have concluded that there is global warming. I suppose there is.

Scientists have concluded that it is probably manmade. OK, I suppose a portion of it is. The question is how much? It could be mostly due to a natural upswing. I think it’s impossible to determine how much is manmade.

Have scientists concluded that it is leading to bad weather? I’ll assume so. This is tragic, but there are worse things 🙂

And finally, the scientific conclusion is, “If nothing is done within 10 years, we’re all gonna be screwed decades down the road.”

This is probably dependent on how much is manmade, but we’ll roll with it. As nice as it is to think green, we got some more important, more distressing, and nearer problems on our hands that cannot be avoided (see China, among others). Nuclear and total war among nearly every country is a lot more devastating in a shorter period of time.

And after that is done, technology (and Al Gore should know this) might take care of the problem. And if not, well then we might have a problem.

  2. That is the EXACT point of view that is addressed in the film. I felt similarly about the topic when I went in and my mind was completely changed. I assure you all those questions are answered in science. ONLY the main stream media has doubts about how much is man made. There is very very clear data showing that the problem is caused entirely by CO2 emissions from man made industry. It also shows how the economy will be stimulated by a lowering in emissions. US made cars cannot be sold in other countries because they do not meet the emission standards. The standards in the US are the lowest of the major powers. Even china has higher standards!

Dealing with our other issues and preventing global warming ARE NOT mutually exclusive! What are the car companies doing right now in the war on terror? NOTHING! so let them developed more efficient cars. Energy companies are making more money than ever! Let them invest it in clean burning renewable fuels so we don’t have to depend on terrorists for oil. Renewable fuel may be the most important front in the war on terror. Without our business what money will funnel down through corrupt governments like Saudi Arabia to fund people like Osama Bin Laden? Not American money!

President Bush himself said we are addicted to oil! We need to force these energy companies to find new fuels and we need car companies to develop new vehicles. The technology is here we just need to put it in action

THERE IS NO DOWN SIDE TO THIS. Lower fuel prices, lower emission, better environment, less reliance on oil. Its a win win win. The only party that needs to make and investment is the big oil companies who have record profits AND government subsidies. ITS TIME. LETS DO IT NOW!

Please go see the film. I cant understand why anyone with any doubt wouldn’t. I swear to you that it will show you the science and if you still don’t believe there is an issue that man can fix I’ll mail you $9.50 and an apology note.

  3. I’ve been reading reports saying that the globe has cooled very slightly since 1998, after a warmup from 1970, after a cooldown from 1940?

    Is the 1998 issue addressed?

There is very very clear data showing that the problem is caused entirely by CO2 emissions from man made industry.

You know, I’d like to believe this but the logic light in my head seems to go off. The earth cooled from 1940 to 1970, warmed before that, and there was a mini-ice age in Europe during part of the 1800s. How can you judge that it is entirely CO2 emissions? How can you put a number on it? I’m sure constant use of CO2 emissions make the globe warmer, and maybe that’s why there was the sharpest increase in global temperature over the past few decades since this has been recorded. Conversely, if we have no entered a global cooling phase as I have read, it is plausible that the reason it is so slight is because of the CO2 emissions, isn’t it?

Perhaps I am going too far, considering I am not anything close to an expert. But if that 1998 fact is true, it certainly hurts the argument.

Dealing with our other issues and preventing global warming ARE NOT mutually exclusive! What are the car companies doing right now in the war on terror? NOTHING! so let them developed more efficient cars.

Well, they obviously don’t want to develop more efficient cars. Are you suggesting that there is a law passed that says no new gasoline-powered cars?

  4. Well here is something interesting. I found that 1998 was the warmest temperature on record, so naturally there has been a decrease since then.

  5. Dealing with our other issues and preventing global warming ARE NOT mutually exclusive!

That’s not what I meant. This clash of civilizations will reduce the population by such an astounding amount that less fossil fuels will be used by a smaller population (the exact amount is impossible to tell. High estimate is 4 billion), causing less global warming.

  6. ALL ADDRESSED IN THE FILM. The reason the temperature seems to be getting cooler at times is the very first slide of the presentation. The reason there has been great warming of the earth in the past and why this is dissimilar scientifically is talked about it extreme detail. What sets the global warming phenomenon apart from seemingly similar trends in the earths history is addressed with painstaking thoroughness.

Also, the ten hottest years in the earths history have occurred in the last 14 years, the hottest being 2005 not 1998.

The film addresses ALL of your previous postings. Every single one of them. Please see it. I challenge you to see the film and make a case against the problem.

  7. Well, they obviously don’t want to develop more efficient cars. Are you suggesting that there is a law passed that says no new gasoline-powered cars?

No, I am suggesting that tax incentives and subsidies are awarded to manufacturers who produce cars that run on alternative fuel. I am also suggesting tax incentives to consumers who buy more efficient cars. But what I am say should be done is we should pass a law requiring better emission standards in our country. I am not saying we need to say ‘by tomorrow no more oil’ I’m saying we set gradual deadlines for manufacturers to meet. I’m sick of the government allowing big business to lower standards at the common man’s expense. Every other country in the world has higher emission standards than the US. Japan is nearly three times higher. Europe is a close second as is Russia. Even China has twice the standards of the United States. Raising emissions standards does not limit the types of cars on the road nor does it effect the price, it just cleans up the environment.

At the end of the film, Gore talked about how we should not give up hope. He pointed out that when a hole was burning in the Ozone Layer the US lead the charge to eliminate the toxins that caused it from the pollution in the air. We did it then and we can do this again. However as you shall see in the film we’re at the last possible moment. The threat is imminent and if we don’t act soon it will be too late.

I cant imagine an article that said the world was cooling down was published in a peer review science journal.

What I can’t grasp is why in the world anyone would be against cleaning up the environment unless they were executives in the big oil and automotive companies. Why is the right so against this issues. Why do they take the side of pollution against the side of science? This should be more of a moral issue than a political one! And the fact that someone who is just an ordinary person who drives to work every day and drives home every night would take a stand against lower priced, cleaner fuel makes me confused.

Just see the film and it will answer your questions. Please, i cant type anymore. Write down all your doubts and check them off as you watch the film.

  8. OK, I will see the film.

What I was getting at earlier was that people said the earth had been cooling since 1998. While this is factually correct, it is misleading. 1998 was the warmest year on record, much higher than any trend line, therefore, it has cooled down since then, but it is at a much higher level than say, 1997.
