The European Court of Justice has just invalidated the EU-US agreement that allows US authorities to view airline "Passenger Name Records" (PNR) on flights from Europe. Under a 2004 agreement, the European Commission (the permanent EU administration) and the European Council (the gathering of leaders from EU member states) agreed to provide 34 different passenger details to US authorities before the takeoff of every EU-US flight. The EU Parliament, which was not a party to the agreements, filed suit in an attempt to have those agreements annulled.

The European Union is concerned that the US athorities can not properly safeguard the information. They also don't believe the information is at all vital to fighting the war on terror.
